All the Smith Animal Hospital veterinarians live and work here locally in Harrison County! For a combined experience of over 100 years,our veterinarians have been providing compassionate medical attention for families and their furry family members. All of our veterinarians have the skills and knowledge to provide your pet with the proper health care they deserve. We provide veterinary services for cats, dogs, rabbits, pet pigs, pocket pets, horses, sheep, goats, chickens, and more.

Our Veterinarians

Dr Sharon Christie, DVM – owner:

History: Dr Christie is a local North Harrison High School Graduate (1981) and attended Purdue University Veterinary School (1987). She originally worked for Dr Smith at Smith Animal Hospital before getting married and moving away. She returned to Harrison County in 2002 as associate, then partner, at Corydon Animal Hospital. The partnership purchased Smith Animal Hospital from Dr Smith in 2012. With the dissolution of the partnership, Dr. Sharon Christie became sole owner of Smith Animal Hospital in August of 2016.

Interests: Dr Christie still lives on the local farm where she and her family have raised and shown chickens, goats, horses, cats, dogs, pigs, cattle, sheep. She has strong interest in community service, surgery, medicine.

Dr. Derek Hendrix, DVM:

History: Dr. Hendrix hails from French Lick. He met and married his wife, Dr. Underwood, while attending Purdue University Veterinary School (1993). He worked in a mixed animal practice for 10 years in Tennessee, and then returned to Indiana doing USDA government work.

His special interests are surgery and riding motorcycles! He and his wife live on a local farm with their horses and cats.

Dr. Ron Smith, DVM:

Dr. Ronald Smith first came to Harrison County from northern Indiana in the mid-70's with his wife Becky, and started the practice out of his home. He worked on large and small animals in and out of his house. As his practice grew, he and his wife decided to move into a new home, and the house where he started his practice is where we still operate out of today.

Dr Michelle Underwood, DVM:

History: Dr Underwood’s hometown is in Fairmount. She met and married her husband, Dr. Hendrix while attending Purdue University Veterinary school. (1993). She worked in a mixed animal practice for 10 years in Tennessee, and then returned to Indiana and worked for Hillside Animal Hospital (Floyd Knobs) for 10 years.

Interests: Dr. Underwood enjoys riding horses on her local farm. She enjoys dentistry, client education, preventative healthcare, and internal medicine.
